Success Rates for Simple Skill Checks in FFG vs. D&D 5e
This comparison is made by lining up the equivalently named difficulty levels, as shown along the top and bottom axes. The success rates are for a base level character, meaning 10 in all attributes for D&D (+0 modifier) and 2 in all characteristics for FFG (with no skill training). This itself is based on the "commoner" stats in D&D and the human species stats in Edge of the Empire.
While the two systems are quite comarable at lower difficulties, FFG is far less punishing as the difficulty increases. Both systems are a little bit silly in that tasks that are described as "simple" or "very easy" have a 20+% failure rate. The Edge of the Empire core rulebook even suggests skipping the skill check for "simple" tasks, even though the base failure rate is 25%!
Similarly silly, the EotE rulebook also gives as an example of a "formidable" task "finding food and shelter on a planet without breathable atmosphere". And yet, a completely untrained average human apparently has a 17% chance of succeeding in this task. I would have thought this would be more difficult than successfully navigating an asteroid field, but C-3PO calculated those odds at 3,720 to 1, so I guess not!
